“If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” Often misattributed to Michael Dell
Barbara J. Alder is the Director of Purdue’s Office of Engagement for Metro Indianapolis. She focuses on economic development, educational and entrepreneurial partnerships in industry sectors strategic to the state of Indiana and Purdue University through initiatives such as:
Prior to joining Purdue, Barb's career spanned 26 years with Verizon Communications (formerly GTE), where she held positions of increasing responsibility in internal audit, customer and network operations, launching new ventures, and regulatory compliance. Prior to joining GTE, she served in Admissions and Financial Aid at Hanover College.
Barb graduated from Tri Jr.-Sr. High School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Hanover College and a Master of Science degree in business administration from Indiana University at Fort Wayne.
From her home on Lake Clearwater in Madison County, she has the opportunity to host family and friends several times a year for boating, fishing, or fireside activities. When she selected the waterside site then and designed and built her home a decade ago it was intended for retirement. Little did she know then that her Type-A tendencies were stronger than she realized and she would be carving out a second career that so far shows no sign of waning.
Barb first learned of Women & Hi Tech when she began her work with Purdue in 2012. That awareness developed into interest and respect for the organization when Barb attended her first event. Not long after, Deb Hallberg (board member emeritus) asked Barb to join the board of directors.
During her time on the board, Barb hopes to increase collegiate involvement and use Women & Hi Tech as part of the ongoing effort to keep STEM talent in Indiana, both male and female.
