Blakely HeatonBlakely Heaton, BS - Biomedical Engineering and Biology, Butler University

Blakely is a sophomore pursuing dual degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Biology as part of the Engineering Dual Degree Program, or EDDP, through Butler University and IUPUI. Traditionally, students in this program graduate take five years to complete their degrees. However, after finishing her Freshman year with a 3.96 GPA, Blakely is on target to earn her final degrees in four years, a tremendous accomplishment for which she received the 2016 EDDP Top Academic Achievement Award.

Blakely believes that innovations that come from the partnership between math and science will change the world, and is interested in contributing to progress in the areas of artificial tissue and prosthetics. She has been described as having high integrity; being hardworking, committed and goal-oriented; and having a curiosity and wiliness to learn that makes her a standout from other students.

She is a Westgate at Crane STEM Scholar, a charter member of the Engineering Student Ambassador organization, a tutor for the Department of Mathematics, an active member of Society of Women Engineers, and a staff reporter for The Butler Collegian. In addition, Blakely volunteers at the Center for Urban Ecology Campus Farm, where she is helping to raise awareness and build sustainable resources in an urban community in Indianapolis.

She shows academic promise, a fervor for learning, and a commitment to her community.
