2016 LLA Award Winner - Outstanding Educator in STEM

In her 25+ years as a teacher, Chris has significantly positively impacted the lives of her students.

After five years as an elementary and middle school science teacher, she became a Gateway to Technology Teacher at Brownsburg East Middle School using the Project Lead the Way Gateway to Technology Engineering program, with an emphasis on STEM disciplines. She continued as Project Lead the Way instructor for several years prior to taking a position as the Science Department Chair and science teacher at Eastwood Middle School, where she facilitated hands-on learning opportunities and helped integrate technology into classrooms.

Over the past three years, Chris has continued to work with Project Lead the Way as a Gateway to Technology Teacher, focused on a curriculum involving Engineering Designs, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, and Engineering Design and Development Senior CADRE. Her programs have received awards from the Indiana Department of Education for excellence in curriculum implementation.

Chris organized the VEX IQ Robotics team, is a sponsor of the 3176 First Robotics Team, and developed the All Girls STEM Camp at the Conner Prairie STEM summer camp. She has also worked with the IUPUI Young Scholars program and continues to work in the community to educate about STEM opportunities.

Chris is an IU School of Education “Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong” Teacher Educator award winner, who works tirelessly to involve and engage her students in their learning experience. As a female instructor in a male-dominated field, Chris creates meaningful connections with young female students, supporting and encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM, even after graduation.
